About
"Tombstones," a collection of twenty songs composed by Michael Pisaro-Liu between 2006 and 2010, constitutes a kind of experimental pop. The pieces take tiny fragments of existing popular, country, or blues songs and put them into an experimental musical situation, introducing them to a kind of chaos, where the arrangement of written-out material is up for grabs. This release features a selection of six songs performed and recorded live in Brooklyn in 2012. Under the direction of guitarist Jason Brogan, and featuring singer Julia Holter, the ensemble includes Tucker Dulin (trombone), Andrew Lafkas (double bass), Katie Porter (clarinets), Sam Sfirri (piano and melodica), and Ron Wiltrout (keyboard and percussion).
Artist Bios
Michael Pisaro-Liu (born, Michael Pisaro, 1961 in Buffalo, New York) is a guitarist and composer and a long-time member of the Wandelweiser collective. While, like other members of Wandelweiser, Pisaro-Liu is known for pieces of long duration with periods of silence, in the past fifteen years his work has branched out in many directions, including work with field recording, electronics, improvisation and ensembles of very different kinds of instrumental constitution.
Julia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist based in Los Angeles. Her interest in sonic mysteries has led her to record in various settings — in her home, outside with a field recorder, and in recording studios — as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice and the space between language and babble. Holter’s music is multi-layered and texturally rich. She has amassed a body of work that explores melody within free song structures, atmosphere, and the impulses of the voice.
Jason Brogan is a guitarist and composer who has collaborated with and performed music by Jürg Frey, Julia Holter, Catherine Lamb, Alvin Lucier, Michael Pisaro-Liu, James Saunders, Sam Sfirri, Mark So, Taku Sugimoto, and Manfred Werder, among others. He curated the concert series Silent Music: 4’33’’ and Beyond, the conspectus Michael Pisaro: 2000–2010, and Keith Rowe: Extended at The New School.
